Getting Started With Radio Controlled Boats

If you have never bought a radio controlled boat before there are a few things you need to decide before you purchase one. The first thing to consider is where will you use the remote controlled boat. For instance you would not want to buy a three-foot gas model to play within your six by six pool. The next thing you need to consider is if you are going to use your radio controlled boat for recreation or for competition. The third thing to consider is what kind of power you want your boat to have. You have three choices for the power. There is electric, Nitro-Power and gasoline powered radio controlled boats. If you are a mechanically inclined person, you may decide to purchase a model radio controlled boat kit. Then when you are out at the lake playing, you can say you built your boat.

Why an electric RC boat?

When you are dealing with an electric RC boat, you are going to find that it is powered by six to twelve rechargeable nicad batteries. When you have an electric radio controlled boat fully charged, you will find that it runs for about fifteen minutes. You can get electric boats that range in style from sailboat to Viking longships, and you can even find models that are made for racing if you are so inclined.

The Nitro-Power Radio Controlled Boat

Nitro-power RC boats are more expensive than electric RC boats, but they are also faster as well. When you are considering purchasing one, remember that you are looking at fuel that is more expensive as well; your expenses don't end at the boat. Also keep in mind that when you are looking at these boats, they run longer than electric powered RC boats.

Why a gasoline powered RC boat?

Gasoline powered RC boats make up the largest population of RC boats out there. They are midrange in price between the two models listed above, and they can still be quite affordable. They tend to have a longer running time than either of the two models listed above as well, and you will find that it uses a weed eater motor to propel it through the water. This is always a good choice for an enthusiast.

The speed of an RC boat is going to be upwards of 60 miles per hour, but remember that this is going to be dependent on the person who is operating it. For instance, while one person is convinced that he or she can only get 45 mph out of the boat, someone with more experience may be able to get as much as 50 mph out of the same boat.

The history of radio controlled boats goes back to 1949, when the International Model Powered Boat Association was formed. This is where the sport of radio controlled boat racing came from and they are the ones who set down radio controlled racing rules today.

As you can see, there are many things a person should consider before purchasing a boat. If you are looking for a recreational boat, you can go with the electrical powered boat. However, if you are looking for competition, you should use the gas or nitro-powered boat.
